Under-Sink Carbon Filters

An under-sink carbon filter handles taste, chlorine and a long list of health contaminants from a unit plumbed out of sight. It won’t match reverse osmosis on dissolved solids, but it is often certified to reduce what a city-water report flags.

What it does

Carbon at the kitchen tap.

City water runs through one or more cartridges under the counter and out of a dedicated tap. What a cartridge is certified to reduce depends on its media and its listing, not on sitting under the sink. It is a different job from reverse osmosis, which needs a membrane and a drain.

How to choose an under-sink filter

What carbon does well

Activated carbon excels at taste, odor and chlorine, and a good carbon block also reduces lead, many VOCs and cysts. It leaves dissolved minerals in place, so the water keeps its taste and mineral content while the targeted contaminants come down.

Read the standard, not the marketing

NSF/ANSI 42 covers taste and chlorine; 53 covers health contaminants like lead, cysts and VOCs. A seal tells you a claim was independently tested for a named contaminant, which is why each product here shows the basis of every claim rather than the box copy.

Plan for replacement cartridges

The real cost of an under-sink filter is the cartridges, not the housing. A cheaper unit that needs frequent, expensive replacements can cost more across five years than a pricier one with long-life filters, so weigh capacity and replacement price together.
