Reducing hardness, or reducing scale.
A softener swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium on a resin bed, then flushes them to drain with brine. A conditioner leaves the minerals in the water and changes how they crystallize so less scale sticks. Only the first makes water soft; the second needs no salt or drain.
- Who it suitsHomes with hard water, scale on fixtures, dull laundry
- What it needsA drain, salt refills, and room for two tanks
- What it won’t doReduce lead, chlorine or anything but hardness and some iron
- Size byHardness × people × iron, never the grain number alone
