Ion-Exchange Softeners

These are the systems that actually reduce hardness minerals. Which exact unit can do that at your hardness, for your household, and at what salt and water cost, is what this page is for.

The systems that actually reduce hardness. Which unit does it at your hardness, for your household, at what salt cost.

How ion exchange worksTreats every outlet · needs salt and a drain
What it does

A resin bed that trades minerals for sodium.

Hard water passes through resin beads holding sodium ions; calcium and magnesium stick to the beads and sodium goes into the water. When the beads are full, the valve flushes them with brine from the salt tank and sends the hardness to drain. Metered valves do this on use; timers do it on a schedule whether you need it or not.

Picks are editorial and the table is a list. Neither knows your hardness, your household or your drain. Tell Finder what you want in your own words. It asks only what it needs, then matches exact configurations.

Before you buy

Four numbers decide a softener before the brand does.

Hardness
Yoursto measure
Scale and soap use climb as hardness rises. Test strips are cheap; your utility report is free.
Capacity @ dose
At a dosenot a box size
Capacity is only meaningful at a salt dose. A tank’s nominal grain size is not what it delivers at an efficient setting, so read the capacity the maker publishes for each dose.
Per regeneration
Per usesalt and water
What you carry home every month. Metered valves regenerate on use, which reduces salt and water use compared with timers.
Household · general guide
Yourhousehold
Household size is one of the facts that sizes a softener, not a sizing on its own. Your number comes from the Sizer, from your hardness and household, or stays “unknown”.
Also decidesIron and manganeseA softener handles small amounts; more than that needs dedicated treatment first, or the resin fouls. Check the maker’s stated limit.Drain and salt accessRegeneration needs a drain within reach and somewhere dry for 40 lb bags.Sodium in the waterSoftened water carries sodium; a bypass for the kitchen tap or an RO under the sink is common.ConditionersNo salt, no drain, nothing taken out of the water. Fine for scale on fixtures, not for soft water.
